Internship Glossary
Wondering what any of the terms
actually mean? Look below!
Administration: the day-to-day running of the company, working in the office
Artistic Director: the person in charge of all artistic aspects of the company, present and future, often working in partnership with the Executive Producer
Assistant Stage Manager: assisting the Stage Manager, who coordinates rehearsals, performances and the nitty-gritty for every show
Box Office/Ticket Services: where all tickets for shows are processed, paid for and distributed
Development: the department that raises the money the company needs to survive
Education: the department that creates and runs the company’s arts education programs
Executive Producer: the person in charge of all staff and the well-being of the company, including planning for the future, often working with an Artistic Director
Financial Management: the department in charge of all things money
General Management: the person or department that makes and executes important decisions that affect the whole company, also overseeing most other departments
House Manager: the person in charge of “the house,” which is where the audience sits, they are also in charge of the ushers
Internship: A volunteer or low-paying job that not only teaches you about a certain profession, but can give you experience that may later help you land a job. Plus, it looks great on your resume! Often internships are a combination of simple tasks, plus more challenging ones.
Literary Management/Play Development:
this department reads and evaluates the plays that are submitted to the company, and they work with the Artistic Director to choose the plays that will be made into productions
Marketing: the department which oversees and creates all the brochures, postcards, performance programs and advertisements
Production/Theatre Operations: the department which oversees the theatre space and all the equipment and people who work there
Public Relations/Publicity: in charge of dealing with all of the media for their show— from newspapers to television to the Internet
Stage Crew: working for the Stage Manager, they do all the behind-the-scenes work during performances
Technical: this includes all of the physical parts of the show including the equipment, but also the designs for the set, costumes, lights and props
Ushers: the people who seat the audience, and make sure they are happy and not breaking any rules
