SPOTLIGHT ON NEIGHBORHOODS
SPOTLIGHT ON NEIGHBORHOOD THEATRE:
The Public TheateR, THE VILLAGE, MANHATTAN
Fifty years ago, when The Public Theater opened, it was committed to making theater that reflected the life within New York City. And in 2006, this still holds true. From classics like Shakespeare revisited with new twists, to fresh plays about homophobia and gentrification, The Public has always aimed to bring new insight to our lives in New York City—the capital of the world—and the culture beyond our five boroughs as well. The Public is always busy, often having more than one show running at a time, plus there’s the occasional free play reading or event. Over the summer, the theater is best known for its residency in the Central Park Delacorte Theater with the New York Shakespeare Festival, where all performances are free—but be prepared to get up early and wait in line for tickets; it’s often the hottest show in town. Right on Lafayette Street, and just below Astor Place, The Public is close to Washington Square Park, Union Square, SoHo and the East Village. Check out the summer offerings:
