BAM: Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale

Shakespeare's Winters Tale at BAM

A jealous king, an imprisoned queen, a banished infant princess and a man-eating bear. Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale is classified as a comedy, but there’s some dark cruelty at its core. The characters are complex and conflicted, the play driven by themes of jealousy, redemption and reconciliation.

Director Edward Hall, with his British troupe, Propeller, made their American debut at BAM last year with a masterful all-male A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Devoted to performing Shakespeare in the style of his day, when women were not allowed on stage, the company displays delightfully skewed gender-bending, not disguising the actors’ obvious maleness.

Five Course LOve at the Minetta Lane Theatre

LOVE, MUSIC, FOOD, COMEDY: FIVE COURSE LOVE

Five Course Love is a new musical comedy described as “2 cups comedy, 1 cup melody, and heaping portions of delicious mouth-watering love.” Set in 5 different restaurants, 3 actors portray 15 characters whose amorous combinations are served up with spicy seasonings and sassy trimmings. The original music ranges in style from country and western to Berlin cabaret to 1950's doo-wop to Italian opera.

What do I do when I get there?

First, check the display boards at the front of the booths to see what shows are on sale. It’s a good idea to keep a few choices in mind in case a show is sold out by the time you get to the ticket window.

• Get in line. You may wait from ten minutes to one hour depending on how long the line is.

• When you get to the front of the line, you’ll see a row of ticket windows.

• Tell the ticket seller your first choice. Most tickets are 50% off the full price.

• The time the show starts and the address of the theatre are printed on the tickets. Theatres open their doors a half-hour before the show begins.
