APPLICATION CHECKLIST

arrowe Read the internship listings and select only the ones that interest you.
arrowe Call the contact person. If you have to leave a message, leave your phone number. Let them know when they can reach you. If you can’t easily be reached,
arrowe tell them when you will call back, and call back on time! Or...
arrowe Write a short e-mail to the contact person. It should be neatly typed, and the heading should include your name, address, phone number, school and grade. The e-mail should briefly state how you heard about the internship and why you are interested. Mention any relevant experience you have, or attach a resume that lists any jobs, extracurricular activities or courses you’ve taken that might be useful for the internship. Be sure your resume also includes your name, address, phone number, school and grade.

If they ask to interview you: arrowe Show up on time, meaning 5 minutes early. arrowe Dress appropriately. arrowe Be prepared to talk about your interest in the position. arrowe Be honest if you have no experience; your willingness to learn is probably what they’re looking for.

If you get an internship: arrowe Show up on time, every time. arrowe Dress appropriately. arrowe Do your best work. arrowe Have fun!

INTERNSHIP GLOSSARY


Administration: the day-to-day running of the company, working in the office

Assistant Stage Manager: assisting the Stage Manager, who coordinates rehearsals, performances and the nitty-gritty for every show

Box Office/Ticket Services: where all tickets for shows are processed, paid for and distributed Development: the department that raises the money the company needs to survive

Education: the department that creates and runs the company’s arts education programs

Financial Management: the department in charge of all things money

General Management: the person or department that makes and executes important decisions that affect the whole company, also overseeing most other departments

House Manager: the person in charge of “the house,” which is where the audience sits, and in charge of the ushers

Internship: a volunteer or low-paying job that not only teaches you about a certain profession, but can give you experience that may later help you land a job. Plus, it looks great on your resume! Often internships are a combination of simple tasks, plus more challenging ones.


Literary Management/Play Development: this department reads and evaluates the plays that are submitted to the company, working with the Artistic Director to choose the plays that will be made into productions

Marketing: the department which oversees and creates all the brochures, postcards, performance programs and advertisements


Production/Theatre Operations: the department which oversees the theatre space and all the equipment and people who work there


Public Relations/Publicity: in charge of dealing with all of the media for their show—from newspapers to television to the Internet


Technical: this includes all of the physical parts of the show including the equipment, but also the designs for the set,
costumes, lights and props


Ushers: the people who seat the audience, and make sure they are happy and not breaking any rules
