"Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this administration will be remembered in spite of ourselves.  No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us. The fiery trial through which we pass will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the latest generation."

- A. Lincoln, Second Annual Message, December 1, 1862

On Good Friday, April 14,1865, the President and Mrs. Lincoln were watching Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre  when John Wilkes Booth aimed his pistol. In Herbert Mitgang’s play, Lincoln’s life flashes before him, from his early days as a lawyer, to President of the United States as the weapon is fired.
