While it whirls together autobiography, comedy and social commentary, the show is fast-paced, funny, foul-mouthed, insightful and, on the down side, occasionally cringe-worthy. That’s how this self-proclaimed Mambo Mouth rolls."

Plenty of plays are tackling issues of system failure, miseducation, and underrepresentation with dogged earnestness. And while the sprightly Latin History for Morons — now playing at Studio 54 in a transfer from its joint premieres at Berkeley Rep and the Public — has its fair share of sincerity, it’s also got a leg up on some of its fellow pieces of sociopolitical theater: the unmistakable, irresistible sense of humor of its creator and star.

But Leguizamo, I realized on this second viewing, also has a personal and more immediate agenda, which is to prove himself a good enough role model for his son, who is suffering both the universal tribulations of early adolescence and the specific cruelties offered at the hands of bully bigots-in-training. The conclusion of this rich entertainment isn’t what you expect – Leguizamo’s genius rests in part in his ability to continually surprise us – which makes it all the more satisfying.
