The setting is a segregated army base in Louisiana where a black officer wielding authority, is unprecedented and resented. The play uses a murder mystery during WW II to expose anger among African American Soldier's that curiously mimics white racism. A Soldier's Play is the winner of a Pulitzer Prize, a Critics Circle Award for Best Off Broadway Play, a New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play, and three Obie Awards.
In 1984, A Soldier's Story, the film version starring Denzel Washington and Adolph Caesar, and directed by Norman Jewison, won prestigious festival awards, and was nominated for three Oscar Awards.
