Iconoclastic choreographer Jérôme Bel returns to FIAF with a new piece commissioned by Crossing the Line and inspired by Isadora Duncan's celebrated autobiographical work My Life. The US premiere of this solo piece performed by Catherine Gallant, a New York-based dancer, historian, and Duncan-specialist, is the culmination of Bel's dancer portrait series.
Isadora Duncan examines an artistic pioneer from her American roots to her ultimate demise in France. The piece uncovers a woman who was a feminist, Darwinist, communist, and an advocate of free love. In bringing the same spontaneity, naturalness, and freedom she exhibited in life to the stage, she established the origins of modern dance.
“Performance art that is smart, severe, even philosophical, and at the same time cheeky and funny and entertaining.”---The New York Times
