Meet Theater Breaking Through Barriers (TBTB), an Off-Broadway company dedicated to advancing artists with disabilities. Founded in 1979 as Theater by the Blind, TBTB changed its name and expanded its focus in 2008 to include artists with any type of disability. With diverse casts tackling a wide range of shows, the company shatters misconceptions about what performers with disabilities are capable of and what types of characters they can play. While the troupe initially focused on classics (Shakespeare, Brecht, Sophocles), in recent years it has commissioned new works by lauded playwrights such as Tony winners John Guare and David Henry Hwang, and MacArthur "Genius Grant" Fellow Samuel D. Hunter. TBTB is currently presenting the world premiere of Public Servant by Emmy-nominated This Is Us writer Bekah Brunstetter at Theatre Row - Theatre Five. It's the second installment in a politically charged trilogy that kicked off with The Cake, which ran at Manhattan Theatre Club earlier this year. At press time, discounted tickets to Public Servant were available to TDF members.

This video was directed by Andrew Block, and shot and edited by Scott Fetterman.

TBTB is an outstanding venue for performers-with-disabilities. I've been sharing this video on our Trained Actors w/Real Disabilities for Film & TV pg. A few of our followers are concerned that Vimeo is not providing closed captioning. We hope this can be resolved for future TBTB videos. Thanks and please keep up your great work.

Hi Vince, Glad you enjoyed the video. And we DO have closed captions on the video on Vimeo. If you click the CC icon on the bottom toward the right, you can turn them on. Let me know if you have trouble doing it. Raven Snook - Editor of TDF Stages
