Catch Michelle Williams, Matthew Broderick, Kara Young and other stars this month

---

The big stars aren't just on Broadway this fall. You can catch Michelle Williams (the movie star, not the Death Becomes Her diva), two-time Tony winners Kara Young and Matthew Broderick, four-time Tony nominee Raúl Esparza and BOOP! breakout Jasmine Amy Rogers in shows beyond Broadway this November. We couldn't include everything, so be sure to browse the listings in TDF's Show Finder to see what else is playing. And remember, most of our 19 (!) picks for October are still running.

If you're a TDF member, log in to your account daily to see what we're selling as ticket inventory changes frequently. Some shows are also available at our TKTS Discount Booths.

Primary Stages: Laowang - begins November 1

59E59 Theaters, 59 East 59th Street between Madison and Park Avenues in Midtown East

Previews begin November 1. Opens November 16. Closes December 14.

Primary Stages presents Laowang, Alex Lin's inventive, immigrant-centric riff on Shakespeare's King Lear about an ailing Chinese restaurant owner who enlists her three grandchildren to help her stave off a greedy developer. But with her mind going, it won't be a cakewalk. A meditation on who we love and what we leave behind, written by a Juilliard grad and techie.

The Public Theater: Initiative - begins November 4

The Public Theater, 425 Lafayette Street at Astor Place in the East Village

Previews begin November 4. Opens November 20. Closes December 7. If you're a TDF member, log in to your account to purchase discount tickets.

Attention epic theatre lovers: Else Went's five-hour coming-of-age portrait of a group of millennials is having its world premiere at The Public Theater. Directed by her wife Emma Rosa Went and set between 2000 and 2004, Initiative was developed over many years with the seven actors who star, so their bonds are seriously real. Love, loss and the ups and downs of life are all explored as these adolescents try to forge a future beyond their small California town.

Hang Time - begins November 7

The Apollo Stages at The Victoria, 233 West 125th Street between Frederick Douglass and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevards in Harlem

Begins November 7. Closes November 15.

The Flea presents an encore run of Hang Time, a 2023 play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Zora Howard (STEW, the indie feature Premature), who also directs, but this time the show is being mounted in her native Harlem. In this intimate meditation on the joy and vulnerability of living in Black male bodies, three men get into deep conversation under an old, wide tree. Julian Rozzell, Kamal Bolden and Bryce Foley star.

Bated Breath Theatre Company: Dirty Books - begins November 7

Bated Breath Theatre, 39 West 14th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues near Union Square

Previews begin November 7. Opens November 14. Closes January 18, 2026. If you're a TDF member, log in to your account to purchase discount tickets.

Site-specific theatre company Bated Breath has mounted shows in churches, parks and on the streets of NYC. But Dirty Books marks a milestone for Mara Lieberman's ensemble: the inaugural production in the troupe's new permanent home. Written and directed by Lieberman, this NC-17 rated interactive experience recreates the 1960s underground soft-core adult publishing scene as the actors—with an assist from the audience—create a fresh erotic story every night. Tickets are $69, of course, but it's on TDF for a lot less!

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee - begins November 7

New World Stages, 340 West 50th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues in Midtown West

Twenty years after its Broadway premiere, the musical comedy The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee returns Off Broadway with a powerhouse cast, including Glee's Kevin McHale and Tony nominees Jasmine Amy Rogers (BOOP!), Lilli Cooper and Justin Cooley (Kimberly Akimbo). Six smart spellers compete to win... but adolescence is even more challenging than orthography. Danny Mefford directs and choreographs this revival, which features a riotous book by Rachel Sheinkin and witty songs by the late William Finn.

---

Gruesome Playground Injuries - begins November 7

Lucille Lortel Theatre, 121 Christopher Street between Bleecker and Hudson Streets in the West Village

Previews begin November 7. Opens November 23. Closes December 28.

Two-time Tony winner Kara Young and Succession's Nicholas Braun star in Gruesome Playground Injuries, a revival of an early play by Pulitzer finalist Rajiv Joseph (Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, Archduke). Audible Theater: The Pansy Craze - begins November 20

Minetta Lane Theatre, 18 Minetta Lane between Sixth Avenue and MacDougal Street in the West Village

A queer cabaret series from performer and activist Mason Alexander Park (The Sandman, Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club in London) and director Hunter Bird, The Pansy Craze celebrates undersung LGBTQ pioneers. Mason hosts and invites special guests to share the stage and their talents, and the lineup for this three-performance run is particular impressive: Tony-nominated Orange Is the New Black star Lea DeLaria on November 20, Tony winner Jesse Tyler Ferguson on November 21 and drag icon Sasha Velour on November 22.

MasterVoices: Sweet Smell of Success

Lincoln Center's Rose Theater, Broadway at West 60th Street in Lincoln Square

Another extremely limited run to put on your radar: MasterVoices' concert staging of the rarely revived Sweet Smell of Success stars four-time Tony nominee Raúl Esparza, Ali Louis Bourzgui (The Who’s Tommy) and singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine (Floyd Collins). Based on the classic movie of the same name, this 2002 musical centers on a desperate 1950s press agent (Bourzgui) who tries to curry favor with an influential but immoral gossip columnist (Esparza), even if it destroys lives. With their powerhouse voices, this cast is guaranteed to make Marvin Hamlisch and Craig Carnelia's superb score sing.
