FRIDAY, APRIL 4th - Simon Rattle brings the “roaring climaxes, perfectly balanced brass, sumptuous lower strings” (Financial Times) he’s known for to Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, a heartrending revelation by the late-Romantic composer and his last completed score.
SUNDAY, APRIL 6th - Mahler referred to his “Song of the Earth” as “a symphony in songs.” Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra illuminate the fleeting nature of human life as depicted in this extraordinary song cycle. Baritone Christian Gerhaher and tenor Stuart Skelton sing the work’s folk texts adapted from Tang Dynasty poetry
MONDAY, APRIL 7th - Mahler’s Tenth Symphony remained incomplete at his death, with the exception of a soaring Adagio first movement and sketches for an imaginatively scored remainder. Some 64 years later, musicologist Deryck Cooke finished weaving this extraordinarily rich tapestry.
