Brahms and the Schumanns

Three intimate perspectives on the musical life of the Romantic-era master, featuring readings and special guests.

Romanticism itself couldn’t have written a better drama: Brahms, Clara Schumann, and Robert Schumann as the closest friends and confidants; Robert declaring Brahms the heir of Beethoven, making him famous, before ending up in a mental asylum; Brahms and Clara flirting with love. In this program, two works by Brahms and two by the Schumanns conjure the composers’ entangled relationships.

Program:
Brahms:
Sonatensatz in C Minor
R. Schumann: piano Trio No. 1, Op. 63
C. Schumann: Three Romances for violin and piano, Op. 22
Brahms: Horn Trio, Op. 40S

t. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble
Pedja Muzijevic, piano

Show Notes: 1 Intermission
Age Guidance: 13
Audience Advisory: A 6:30 pm pre-concert discussion, led by Deborah L. Cabaniss, M.D. (Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Columbia University) and Thomas Cabaniss (composer and faculty member, The Juilliard School), will explore the composers’ intricate, psychologically-charged relationship.
