Following its premiere, Strindberg’s daring and explicit drama of the ill-fated romance between a well-born young woman and a household servant ran afoul of the censors and was considered so provocative that it was banned throughout much of Europe. Now, more than 125 years later, Miss Julie is one of the playwright’s best-known and most frequently performed works.
In this edgy staging set in present-day Russia, Strindberg’s ground-breaking "modern woman" blooms in the hands of renowned director Thomas Ostermeier, artistic head of Berlin’s Schaubühne, and features two of Russia’s leading film, stage, and television actors: Evgeny Mironov and Chulpan Khamatova, joined by rising star Julia Peresild.
Performed in a provocative new adaptation by Mikhail Durnenkov—one of Russia’s most sought-after dramatists—this production unravels the complex affair with consummate skill, retaining every bit of the fiery aura and subversive power of the original.
