New York Festival of Song creates intimate song concerts of great beauty and originality, weaving music, poetry, history and humor into unforgettable evenings of compelling theater, entertaining, educating and creating community among performers and audiences in a spirit of shared adventure. It was founded by Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, who now act as the artistic directors, pianists and hosts.
Music from Harlem’s gay underground, including works by Billy Strayhorn and Porter Grainger, as well as songs popularized by Bessie Smith, Alberta Hunter, Ethel Waters, and ‘Ma’ Rainey.
