In 1922, the Jordan family is one of the oldest and finest families in a Maine farming community. After the death of the matriarch, three grasping and entitled heirs are dismayed and insulted that the family fortune is left to a shrewish second cousin, bewildered that she should both refuse them any assistance and yet take on as a farm hand the fourth heir, a prodigal black sheep in the family. She proves a stern task-master, he a resentful but hard working partner. Can a true love be born of a union arranged from beyond the grave, or do our natures defy our highest aspirations?
