Set in New York City during the Great Depression, Rocket to the Moon tells the story of Ben Stark, a middle-aged dentist in the midst of a personal and professional crisis. His dental practice is foundering, and his marriage to the loyal, pragmatic Belle is buckling under the weight of constant money worries. Enter Belle’s father, Mr. Prince, a flamboyant, hedonistic and very wealthy old man who, deeply estranged from his daughter, is nevertheless very interested in Ben’s well-being.

Offering to set him up in a more lucrative practice uptown, Mr. Prince intuits that his son-in-law’s depression is more than just financial; it’s the result of years of lowered expectations, of “keeping his head down,” of never asking for more, particularly in matters of the heart. The remedy, according to Mr. Prince, a Mephistopheles of cunning and moral ambiguity, is for Ben to have an affair with his young, idealistic receptionist – Cleo Singer. In the heat of a New York summer, Cleo and Ben embark upon an affair that will transform both their lives, endangering Ben's comfortable existence while opening him up to unimagined possibilities
