KRISTINA is the true story of the scandals leading up to the abdication of Sweden's only queen.

Her naturalistic portrayal in this play made Strindberg's name as a revisionist historian and led to vicious attacks on him for the unforgivable sin of telling the truth. We see Kristina struggling against old lovers and former mentors, hiding her impending conversion to Roman Catholicism, putting on ballets to distract from her financial and sexual misconduct, fighting her feminine nature and finally succumbing to it.

Kristina wore pants, which were first adopted by women 300 years later; she struggled with a world not ready to accept a strong-willed woman in a position of authority...supreme authority in her case. Design evokes Garbo and the Roaring Twenties as a parallel to the 1600s.
