New York Live Arts
219 West 19th Street, New York City, NY 10011
A solo creation at the intersection of theater, dance and visual art installation, Bronx Gothic gives palatable force to the charged relationship between two girls on the verge of adolescence in 1980s outer-borough New York City–Orchard Beach, Nathan’s hot dogs, and Whitney Houston’s hair bring an unforgettably moving landscape of memory to life with unflinching honesty.
Okwui Okpokwasili’s breakthrough work is fully realized for the first time at New York Live Arts as part of a multi-year collaboration. Okpokwasili’s intensely physical performance pushes against extremes—and reverberates with a potency that threatens to break the body—in this partially-true chronicle of one woman’s past.
Created in collaboration with Peter Born, Bronx Gothic draws inspiration from Victorian-era novels and West African griot storytelling to reveal a dark and powerful tale of sexual self-discovery, the (brown) body in transformation and the humor, love, strangeness and even terror that accompany it.
PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE:
WEDNESDAY thru SATURDAY @ 7:30 PM

“In language that is by turns blunt and poetic, crudely funny and incantatory, Ms. Okpokwasili conjures and probes this adolescent friendship, a jumble of insults, anger and love…A magnetic performer”
