U.S. stage premiere
George Benjamin’s masterpiece, which Le Monde declared “the best opera written in twenty years,” finally arrives in New York for a much-anticipated premiere.

Erotic and visceral, Written on Skin tells of a woman bound by a cruel marriage and consumed by an illicit passion. Winning rapturous praise with each performance, this unsettling tale of submission, desire, and liberation stars Barbara Hannigan and Christopher Purves, reprising the roles they originated.

Alan Gilbert conducts the superb Mahler Chamber Orchestra, whose otherworldly sound palette was a major inspiration to the composer.

Performed in English with English supertitles
