Dames at Sea is a tap-happy gem of a show that celebrates the golden era of movie musicals with dazzling dames and a heart as big as the ocean!

Ruby steps off a bus in Manhattan, and into her first Broadway show, but hours before the opening night curtain is to rise, the cast learns their theater is being demolished, so it is “all hands on deck” to find a stage to put on the show. Featuring rollicking tap dancing, love at first sight, joyful music and a boatload of laughs, this glittering musical extravaganza has everything you need to sweep your glooms away.

Reviews

  • Come and meet those dancing feet over at the Helen Hayes Theatre, where a tap-tastic revival of Jim Wise, George Haimsohn, and Robin Miller's backstage-spoof musical Dames at Sea has sailed into port. A small-scale riff on the big 1930s Busby Berkeley films (namely 42nd Street), this silly little show is only now receiving its Broadway premiere, 49 years after first being presented off-off-Broadway at the legendary Caffe Cino. For lovers of the genre, Dames at Sea is a delightful romp that doesn't feel like it's aged a day since 1966.

  • The musical is right in the wheelhouse of director-choreographer Randy Skinner, who never met a nostalgic dance interlude he didn't like. He identifies the vintage with a black and white Vitaphone movie titles sequence, complete with picture cards for each of the cast, their faces framed by nautical lifesaving rings. The opening number, "Wall Street," tips its sequined top hat to Gold Diggers of 1933, right down to the dancing currency, while key characters borrow their names from Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell and Joan Blondell, the stars of that film and its kin, such as 42nd Street and Footlight Parade. You don't have to have a TCM habit and a soft spot for the movie musicals of the period to appreciate the homage, but it helps.

  • “Dames at Sea” is a technicolor, tap dance-filled tribute to the movie musicals of the 1930s. It’s delightful, and it doesn’t take itself seriously for a minute.Stop us if you’ve heard this before: A gal gets off a bus from out West and lands a part in a Broadway musical that same day. When the leading lady gets sick and needs a replacement, the frazzled director eyes the untested ingenue, shakes a fist and proclaims: “It’s a chance in a million … but it just might work. After an evening with the “Dames” ensemble of dancers and singers, directed and choreographed by Encores! vet Randy Skinner -- he also worked on the 2001 revival of “42nd Street” -- you will surely agree. It works.
