Award-winning writer and performer Pat Kinevane and company Fishamble return to Irish Arts Center with Underneath, following the runaway international success of Forgotten (spring 2010) and Silent (fall 2012).

Sticks and stones didn’t break Her bones, but words and pointing crushed Her. Is Beauty really only skin deep? Does Ugliness hide somewhere deeper?

A woman lies dead in her freshly dug grave in the Tumbledown cemetery, Cobh, County Cork. Here she tells the story of her life: her happy childhood and the mother who loved Cleopatra; being struck by lightning and then missing school for a year; her night shifts in hotels washing and mending laundry; up to her ultimate and untimely demise in a north Dublin flat; all via a series of unlikely encounters and heartbreaking betrayals.

This stunning new play is a blackly comic, richly vivid tale of a life lived in secret, a testament to the people who live on the fringes, under the nose of everyday life. It explores the surface – and what lies underneath.
