The Escher Quartet has been acclaimed for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty. Championed by the Emerson String Quartet, the Escher has toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia. In its home town of New York, the ensemble serves as Artists of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, where last season they presented a critically acclaimed 3-concert series featuring the quartets of Benjamin Britten
Alexander Zemlinsky’s four numbered string quartets span some four decades, moving from the conservatism of his Brahms-inspired youth to the experimental works of his mature years.
Written just after the Lyric Symphony, the Third Quartet is constructed in a cool, austere language far removed from the emotional, expressionistic atmosphere of the Second Quartet. The Fourth Quartet, written in memory of Alban Berg, is a fitting conclusion to an important body of work bridging the Romantic world of the nineteenth century to the modern age of the twentieth.
PROGRAM
Zemlinsky Quartet No. 1 in A major for Strings, Op. 4 (1896)
Zemlinsky Quartet No. 2 for Strings, Op. 15 (1913-15)
Zemlinsky Quartet No. 3 for Strings, Op.19 (1924)
Zemlinsky Quartet No. 4 for Strings, Op. 25 (1936)
