Inspired by an astonishing true event, the wholly original new musical Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and 40s.

When successful literary editor Alice Murphy meets an ambitious young soldier just home from World War II, their connection inspires Alice to confront a shocking incident from her past. Together they discover a long-buried secret with the power to transform their lives.

From Grammy® and Emmy® winner Steve Martin and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Edie Brickell comes this hopeful and heart-swelling new musical, directed by Tony® winner Walter Bobbie.

Reviews

  • Bluegrass on Broadway? Yes sirree. The warming sounds of banjos, fiddles and even an accordion are filling the Cort Theater, where the musical “Bright Star” opened on Thursday, bringing a fresh breeze from the South to the spring theater season.Perhaps more surprising is the source of the songs that give a heady lift to this nostalgia-tinged show, a romantic tale set in North Carolina in the 1920s and the 1940s. The authors are Steve Martin, better known as a comic, actor and occasional novelist, and Edie Brickell, who rose to pop-chart fame some time ago. (They collaborated on the music and the story, with Mr. Martin providing the book and Ms. Brickell the lyrics.)

  • Still, there's a disarming sweetness and sincerity to this folksy Americana bluegrass musical, created by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, which makes the tuneful melodrama a pleasurable experience. It also helps that talented lead Carmen Cusack brings such integrity and warmth to her performance.

    -----Hollywood Reporter
  • Steve Martin and Edie Brickell found inspiration for “Bright Star” from a century-old story about an unwanted infant. From that anecdote—the tale of the “Iron Mountain Baby,” who is thrown from a train—the songwriting duo have crafted an original musical, drumming up backstory as they’ve gone along.“Bright Star” is now open at the Cort Theatre, after tune-ups at the Old Globe in San Diego and the Kennedy Center. There’s much to admire in the final product: The musical is twangy and tightly performed, with a sweeping score.
