In May 1921, the new musical Shuffle Along became the unlikeliest of hits, significantly altering the face of the Broadway musical, as well as that of New York City.

By the time Shuffle Along stumbled into town after a back-breaking pre-Broadway tour, it was deeply in debt and set to open at a remote Broadway house on West 63rd Street. But with an infectious jazz score and exuberant dancing, Shuffle Along ignited not just Broadway, but all of New York City. Because of Shuffle Along, Uptown and Downtown met -- and became one.

The 2016 Shuffle Along, created anew by a remarkable constellation of artists, brings the original show back to glorious life, while simultaneously telling the heretofore unknown backstage saga of its creation -- and how it changed the world it left behind.

Add in a half-dozen stellar performances, a sterling production, and an astoundingly talented ensemble and you have a musical that moves in a manner we haven’t seen since Michael Bennett’s Dreamgirls.

  • It is no mean feat to revive an archaic but seminal Broadway musical — in this case, the all-black musical comedy "Shuffle Along" of 1921 — and create an entertainment that not only celebrates the classic song-and-dance material but ennobles it further by showcasing the royal talents of Audra McDonald, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Billy Porter, Brandon Victor Dixon and Joshua Henry, thus vaulting it to new heights.

    But it is a yet-greater achievement to simultaneously offer what is essentially a lesson in theatrical and racial history. And to contextualize said show through the struggles of its courageous creators to get the darn thing up in the first place without greedy white producers stealing their cash or famous white creatives showing up to watch and then rip off the material, or endless internal arguments over the self-destructive dangers of minstrelsy catapulting the entire enterprise.

His Shuffle Along, or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed is explosive not simply in the auditory sense, though the shattering artillery onslaught of Savion Glover’s choreography may ring in your ears (and change the way you think about the expressive potential of tap) forever. Shuffle Along is also explosive in the way a nuclear reaction is: Wolfe bombards a core of ideas about race and culture with a billion showbiz protons to produce both a gorgeous spectacle and a big, smoking crater where your former ideas of Broadway once stood.
