Direct from a sold-out, acclaimed run in London… American Psycho comes home to the city that inspired it.

Based on the best-selling novel by Bret Easton Ellis
, and set in the epicenter of excess: 1980s Manhattan, this hit musical tells the story of Patrick Bateman, a young and handsome Wall Street banker with impeccable taste and unquenchable desires. Patrick and his elite group of friends spend their days in chic restaurants, exclusive clubs and designer labels. But at night, Patrick takes part in a darker indulgence, and his mask of sanity is starting to slip…

Benjamin Walker (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson) stars alongside a first-class cast, including Tony Award® winner Alice Ripley (Next to Normal), Heléne Yorke (Bullets over Broadway), Tony nominee Jennifer Damiano (Next to Normal), and Drew Moerlein in his Broadway debut.

American Psycho
features a score by Duncan Sheik, the Tony and Grammy Award®-winning composer of Spring Awakening, and reinvented for the stage by Olivier Award- winning director Rupert Goold (King Charles III) writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Glee), Tony-nominated choreographer Lynne Page (La Cage Aux Folles) and three-time Olivier Award-winning scenic designer Es Devlin all combine to make this new musical the sexiest show on Broadway.

Reviews

  • Who wants to see a Broadway musical about a serial killer? If the perennial popularity of Sweeney Todd is any indication, a lot of people. However, American Psycho is not your grandma's serial-killer musical. With a score by Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) and book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark), this distinctively modern show offers an uncomfortable mix of hilarity and horror. Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis, it is now making its Broadway debut at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Under the masterfully precise direction of Rupert Goold, this roller-coaster ride for the stage will have you peering over your shoulder at the well-dressed patrons behind you.

  • 4 1/2 STARS (out of 5)

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial 1991 book, the story follows Patrick Bateman, a Wall Streeter and mass murderer, through the excess of ’80s New York. A white box set and video projections evoke the minimalism and garish glare of the era. Author Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (“Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”) and composer-lyricist Duncan Sheik (a Tony winner for “Spring Awakening”) are mostly faithful to the novel. But they heighten the ironic humor and lessen the graphic violence of both the book and the Christian Bale film.

    ------New York Daily News
  • And as for the violence — it’s simply part of the story, usually a joke, and often part of a stunning stage picture. All that red blood looks spectacular against Es Devlin’s stark white set. Have we become so desensitized, in a post-Dexter, American Horror Story age, that multiple on-stage murders elicit nary a cringe? Or are we that certain that everything we’re seeing is happening in Patrick’s head?
Again, it’s up to you to decide.
