In 400 years of Shakespeare, there's never been a night of Bard on the boards quite like Gary Busey's One-Man Hamlet as Performed by David Carl.

As Shakespearean actor, puppeteer, singer and action-movie director, Gary Busey (played by New York actor-writer David Carl) performs each scene of Hamlet his way, with occasional detours into great Busey moments from Buddy Holly and Lethal Weapon. The heady mix of high and low-brow comedy celebrates Shakespeare's classic by using it to reflect upon the jaded, celebrity-crazed, meme-obsessed world around us.

Written by: David Carl after William Shakespeare
Created by: David Carl and Michole Biancosino
Directed by: Michole Biancosino

Gary Busey's One-Man Hamlet won the Outstanding Solo Performance Award at the New York Fringe in 2014, and received 5-star reviews at the 2015 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Reviews

  • Critic's Pick (4 Stars) Carl’s 80-minute solo is as much stupid fun as its title suggests.

Employing paper puppets (bearing the actor’s face, of course) and interactive video, Carl, a man who can confidently place “Gary Busey Impersonator” at the top of his CV, and director Michole Biancosino take us on a psychotic ride through the tragedy’s five acts. It’s crazy hilarious..
