In 1986 New Dance Alliance (NDA) created the Performance Mix series now known as the Performance Mix Festival to advance emerging methods, techniques, and trends of innovative dance.
Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Performance Mix Festival as it returns to its first venue, Henry Street Settlement, where it started in 1986. Founder/curator Karen Bernard has orchestrated an eclectic program that represents the best of the last 29 years of experimental dance, contact improvisation, tap, theater, performance art, new music, and multi-discipline works. “The most elaborate festival of the unpredictable” (New York Times), the 2016 festival will feature works by 40 local and international artists in 15 distinct events over six days. With guest curators from Montreal, New York City, and Northampton, MA, Performance Mix’s annual community breakfast, artist talks, surprises, libations and deliciousness.
Of the many dance festivals in New York, NDA’s Mix stands alone in its commitment to 1) offering artists comprehensive career and artistic development support; 2) presenting risk-taking art by emerging and established artists at a critical experimental phase of their development; and 3) providing programming for audiences interested in the creative process of experimental dance and performance.
