What We Wanted is about a family of three lovers who live together on a small college campus in rural Ohio. They have made an idyllic life together but after many years the things they want are about to drive the family apart.
Julian is a professor whose affair with a younger colleague blows up when she is denied tenure and files a complaint against him. Agnes receives an offer to become the top editor of the literary magazine she works for but must move to NYC if she wants the coveted position. Sally, an elementary school teacher, helps her daughter's boyfriend, Dale, a high school dropout, study for the GEDs but crosses boundaries with the smitten young man. Reggie, who adores Agnes and Julian, exacts revenge on her mother, fueled by her bitter resentment that Sally left her to join the trio years earlier.
