Renowned 20th-century African-American artist "Uncle Jimmy" has died poor and alone; his life's work — a radical retelling of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn called The Illuminated Twain — is left behind in pieces.

His estranged son James Clemens Jr. struggles to eulogize his father when he is interrupted by the arrival of Uncle Jimmy's widow, Edna Finn, the self-proclaimed last living descendent of Huckleberry.
