Opera’s “Untamed!” characters form the basis of our exciting 2017 Festival.

In Cavalli’La Calisto contains lots of choices, including Jove himself. The animals in Janácek’s The Cunning Little Vixen (Príhody lišky Bystroušky) aren’t the only wild characters in that opera: many of its themes explore parallels between human and animal kingdoms.

Operas we’ll explore in our scenes program will include Don Pasquale, Pelléas et Mélisande, Carmen, Rusalka and more. Finally, an art song recital called “Wild Things.”

First performed in Venice in 1651, La Calisto retells Book II of Ovid’s Metamorphoses: an ancient myth that dives deep into matters of gender, homosexual love, and infidelity.

Considered to be the most extraordinary and unconventional of Janácek's stage works, The Cunning Little Vixen tells a cautionary tale about the connections between people and animals, and the cyclical nature of life and death.
