Tina Fey’s new Broadway musical “Mean Girls” delivers a fizzy blast that tickles the ears, eyes and funny bone.The queen of laughs from film, TV, books and awards ceremonies expands her brand to the Great White Way with this show that opened Sunday night at the August Wilson Theatre.Based on Fey’s 2004 screenplay about a high school loser-turned-queen-bee, “Mean Girls” is this season’s most likely to crowd-please.

Less than two minutes into the smart, splashy new musical of Tina Fey’s 2004 teen comedy Mean Girls, my friend leaned over and whispered delightedly, “This is the most postmodern thing I’ve ever seen!” Okay, so she’s got a master’s in dramaturgy, but also, she’s not wrong. Mean Girls — with a clever book that’s unmistakably by Fey, music by her husband Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Nell Benjamin — isn’t just a fun, and very funny, show: It’s continuously, mischievously self-aware.

A canny crossbreed of Heathers and Hairspray, the musical has been adapted by Tina Fey from her own 2004 cult movie, and updated to reflect the new realities of smartphones and social media. Fey is one of the sharpest comic writers in America, and the show remains, in some sense, her vehicle: an auto de Fey, burning with bookish anger at the limits young women place on each other and themselves

There are no elevators or escalators at this theatre. A stair lift is provided for accessible entrance to the orchestra from the street level.

Entrance

Three sets double doors in series: 1st set (each 26") to outer lobby; down three steps through 2nd set (each 30"). Alternate entrance: Stair lift provides direct access from 52nd Street. Enter at doors at ground level, left of main entrance (4th set of double doors under the marquee). Lift immediately inside door. Goes directly to orchestra level. Water Fountain

The water fountain is located in lower lobby, one flight down from the orchestra (8 steps down from street level). For patrons unable to use the stairs, water will be available at the concession stand.
