Eleven year-old Pecola Breedlove desperately wants to be loved by her family and schoolmates. Instead, she faces constant ridicule and abuse. Blaming her dark skin, she prays for blue eyes – as blue as Shirley Temple’s, as blue as a blonde baby-doll’s – certain that their beauty is the only thing standing between her and the happiness of the white girls at school.

Narrated by Pecola’s young neighbors, Claudia and Frieda MacTeer, The Bluest Eye is the heart-wrenching story of a young black girl’s tragic coming of age in 1940’s Ohio. This powerful adaptation explores the destructive power of racism and the strength of a community attempting to embrace an era of change.
