SINDBAD LAB - A performance festival dismantling and rebuilding the classic Sindbad tales from The One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Silk Road, MENA (Middle Eastern / North African), and South Asian stories

Program:

May 31 – June 3
More Wonder, Please
directed by Stephanie Weeks
What are the fortunes we seek beyond ourselves? What is gained by going through toil and hardship? Is anything lost by it?

June 7 – 10
Inshallah/Mashallah
composed / performed by Avi Amon
There are way too many Sindbads! An inter-dimensional experiment gone horribly awry or a successful Ponzi Scheme? Which Sindbad are you destined to be?

June 13 – 17
The Triumphant [Parts 3, 4 and 7]
created & directed by Kareem Fahmy
Trapped in a prison, a group of gay men conjure the fantastical stories of Sindbad the Sailor as they await their uncertain future. A multi-media theatre performance piece that draws both from interviews conducted with members of the LGBTQ community in Egypt and mythic stories of survival and bravery

June 21 – 24
YOGIBOGEYBOX
created by Moe Yousuf
Mixing traditional forms of drone music, UAV drone choreography, erhu, morse code, heavy synth, Western instrumentation, and dabke dance, YOGIBOGEYBOX combines the sheer spectacle of the Sindbad tales with an ethnomusicological exploration of neo-colonialism’s impact on Silk Road cultures.
