Vivian (Samantha BarksLes Misérables) and Edward (three-time Tony® nominee Andy KarlGroundhog Day) are unlikely soulmates who overcome all odds to find each other... and themselves. Based on the hit film, a businessman hires an escort to spend the weekend with him, but before long, the two learn that their connection goes beyond a simple transaction.

  • While the creative team strains a tad too diligently to give the female lead agency and sidestep the Cinderella story's awkward sexual politics, the show is best appreciated as a retro pleasure, guilty or not, and robust box office in previews suggests that audiences are eager to succumb to its charms.
  • They have made one small but important update. The heroine’s seamy occupation is acknowledged at the get-go by turning her first song into a heartfelt lament, “Anywhere but Here,”effectively delivered in country style by a strong-voiced Samantha Barks.
  • The musical’s amplifications include a slightly larger role for Vivian’s roommate Kit (played with gusto by the steel-lunged Orfeh), who in this version, tailored to today’s more enlightened attitudes toward portrayals of prostitutes, ultimately and rather preposterously decides to move from breaking the law to enforcing it, by becoming a cop. Also expanded is the subplot regarding Edward’s plan to strip-mine a troubled company and sell off its assets. Here Vivian is even more instrumental in making him see the error of his ways, as we learn about the owners’ plans to build cruise ships.
