Composer Ted Hearne (The Source, 2014 Next Wave) and poet legend Saul Williams consider the difference between space and place in this dizzyingly rich mix of music, memoir, and mapmaking directed by Patricia McGregor.
Inspired in part by Hearne’s time in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Place roams from his Chicago childhood to deconstructing theories of manifest destiny and modern appropriation to consider how staking a claim always implicates others. Six vocalists and 18 instrumentalists perform an arresting score with nods to R&B, indie rock, gospel, experimental, and other music, helping to cast the ramifications of gentrification in a new light.
