The second week of DoublePlus features works by Julian Barnett and Mina Nishimura in an evening curated by KotaYamazaki.
Barnett's 2 Strings X is a cacophony of vibration and memory. Barnett attempts to calibrate and locate in a fluctuating field, exploring lineage, symbolism, and embodied artifacts. Nishimura's Sinking while Floating, Singing while Thinking is a study on fantastical bodies and also is an attempt of pinning down bodies that slip away from a present time, space and action.
Julian Barnett creates performances that examine the social-political possibilities for transformation and empathy, through the lenses of philosophy, musicology, science, and the supernatural. Born in Tokyo and raised in California, he works as a choreographer, performer, and arts advocate/educator.
Mina Nishimura, from Tokyo, was introduced to butoh and improvisational dance through Kota Yamazaki. She was the danceweb scholar at Impulse Tanz in 2009, and has been the Artist-in-Residence at Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Chez Bushwick, Movement Research, and Camargo Foundation (France)
