Dimitris Papaioannou is the artistic heavyweight you’ve never heard of.

The idiosyncratic Greek director-choreographer got his start as a painter, led the creation of the opening ceremonies for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, and recently became the first artist invited to create a new work for Tanztheater Wuppertal since Pina Bausch’s death.

The Great Tamer is a ravishing mess of disembodied limbs on a shape-shifting floor. A cheeky commentary on our existence, set to the strains of Strauss’ Blue Danube waltz. As macabre as it is enchanting.
