When an evil trio of bankers smells crude oil deposits under the picturesque Chaillot quarter of Paris, the neighborhood’s motley residents must rally to save all that’s beautiful and good in this madcap musical fable that, in 1969, made Jerry Herman the first composer-lyricist in history to have three shows running simultaneously on Broadway. Now, two-time Tony winner Donna Murphy triumphantly revives Herman’s giddy, garish heroine Countess Aurelia to perform some of the composer’s sweetest and most sumptuous songs, including “I Don’t Want to Know,” “Kiss Her Now” and “Each Tomorrow Morning.” A true hidden gem of the Broadway canon, this delightful romp directed and choreographed by Josh Rhodes (Encores! Mack & Mabel) blends Herman’s trademark optimism with a dash of social critique and a soupçon of ecological urgency: a perfect blend for our times. An all-star cast including Brooks Ashmanskas, Andréa Burns, Ben Fankhauser, Christopher Fitzgerald and Ann Harada brings this singular revival to life.
