New York City Center’s Principal Dance Company returns for a holiday season celebrating lineage and legacy.?Interim Artistic Director Matthew Rushing presents Sacred Songs, which features music originally used in Alvin Ailey’s seminal Revelations that was later omitted. Rushing's work beautifully resurrects and reimages these spirituals as an offering to our present needs for lamentation, faith and joy.??
Former Company member Jamar Roberts’s Al-Andalus Blues, commissioned by City Center, is set to music by Roberta Flack and Miles Davis. Finding Free, by former Company member Hope Boykin, is an exploration into the sources of people’s personal freedoms, with an original score by Matthew Whitaker (performed live onstage at select performances). Lar Lubovitch, known for his lush choreography and musicality, presents Many Angels, his first world premiere for Ailey. The season also includes the 25th anniversary return of Ronald K. Brown’s blockbuster Grace and a new production of Elisa Monte’s mesmerizing Treading.
