Artist Florentina Holzinger returns to NYU Skirball with the North American premiere of TANZ (2019), completing her trilogy that began with Recovery and Apollon (seen at NYU Skirball in 2020). A ballet class under the direction of German ballerina Beatrice Cordua, the first to dance Le sacre du printemps naked, provides the framework for TANZ. The performers undergo rigorous training in “action ballet,” the so-called “sylphic studies.” In joint rituals, they learn to master their bodies and minds, and they acquire supernatural powers, such as flying. With an all-female cast of twenty- to over-eighty-years-old performers who represent different dance backgrounds, TANZ is a quest for perfection in an ephemeral world, during which the gross is transformed into the sublime.
