In On the Harmful Effects of Tobacco and Other Substances, director Lita Lofton masterfully reimagines Anton Chekhov’s hidden gems—short stories, letters and lesser-known plays—into a vibrant tapestry of wit and humanity. Over four years, Lofton dedicated herself to crafting a modern adaptation, meticulously comparing translations to preserve the brilliance of Chekhov’s style while infusing contemporary resonance. Featuring an all-Black cast, this production transforms the stage into a celebration of universal themes and intimate truths, bringing fresh life to a timeless narrative. A mesmerizing mix of humor, pathos and keen observation, it’s Chekhov like you’ve never seen before.
