Lyon Opera Ballet's exhilarating double bill brings together works from either side of the century divide: Merce Cunningham's 1999 masterpiece BIPED and the US premiere of Christos Papadopoulos's Mycelium.
In BIPED, algorithmic patterns intersect and recombine, layering digital and live images to precise effect. Cunningham used cutting-edge technology to both generate movement phrases and capture his dancers in motion.
In Mycelium, vibratory, trancelike micromovements propel some 20 dancers across the stage in jaw-dropping unison. The rising choreographic star and first winner of the Rose International Dance Prize was inspired by forms in nature, particularly the fascinating interconnectivity of mushrooms.
