Jonathan Biss, one of the great Beethoven interpreters of our day, performs piano sonatas from various stages of the master’s career.
Profound emotional depth, effervescent wit, and dazzling flights of virtuosity are present in this music for which Biss has a special affinity. This recital includes the “Hammerklavier”—the German word for “pianoforte”—an expansive masterpiece where power and fragility are juxtaposed. The sonata also boasts a slow movement of immense scope and culminates in a double fugue that rivals Bach in the beauty and complexity of its counterpoint.
