The Keys to Heaven: Music of Palestrina
Palestrina is the best-known 16th-century representative of the Roman School of musical composition. He had a lasting influence on the development of church music, and his work is often seen as the culmination of Renaissance polyphony. The concert will feature G. P. da Palestrina’s mighty Missa Tu es Petrus along with the motet on which it is based. The concert will also include well-known motets such as Sicut cervus, in addition some of his lesser-known jewels: the motets Caro mea, Improperium expectavit, and Ego sum panis vivus, and the hymn setting Veni creator spiritus.
Choir of St. Luke in the Fields
The Choir of St. Luke in the Fields is the resident vocal ensemble at the Church of St. Luke in the Fields in New York City's historic Greenwich Village. Under the direction of David Shuler since 1988, the Choir regularly performs masses and motets dating from the fifteenth century to the present as part of the church's liturgy. They are known for their historically informed performances of Early Music
