The ninth annual Dream Up Festival – TNC’s Summer Showcase
The motto of the Festival is “Dream Up: Invent, Concoct.
The festival is dedicated to new works. The question of the artist’s vision to free or attack the material will be asked to each application. The festival does not want traditional theater which is presented in the traditional way. Theater for the New City wants to use this festival as a way to push ideas to the forefront with the hope of revealing roads less traveled or undiscovered. Presentation of a straightforward play must be imaginative in some way.
Festival Highlights:
Creditors
August Strindberg
Creditors is a play about open marriage in an era that today’s public would think such behavior to have been unthinkable. It was not: Strindberg was a journalist before he became a novelist and a novelist before a playwright. He is reporting, if in heightened form, and the message remains relevant, perhaps having become even more so.
Lucinda and the Wolves
Robyn Migel
As the “featured speaker” for an addiction/recovery group, Lucinda weaves her fractured fairytale of love and loss, addiction & internet stripping, and a traveling bow and arrow act. Along the way she shares lessons she’s learned about wild wolf behavior that can be applied to the wolves in your life
Occasionally Nothing
Natalie Menna
It was inevitable, perhaps, that our post-truth politics would seep into 21st century absurdist theater. One sunny example is "Occasionally Nothing", which takes us to a dismal time-to-come when something can become a profound, obvious nothing.
The Rounds
Justin Moriarty
Born from the desire to redefine the War On Drugs, “The Rounds” is an experimental dance-theatre performance. Utilizing the true stories of three addicts in varying stages of recovery, audience members are propelled into the world of addiction and mental health in an immersive and moving experience.
