"Silence! Silence!" These are the first and last words spoken by Bernarda Alba

Federico Garcia Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba (La Casa de Bernarda Alba) is the story of a tyrannical mother who dominates her five unmarried daughters - all of whom harbor a secret passion for one man.

In this repressed environment, Lorca creates an explosion of hatred, jealousy, despair and passion - and tragic consequences.

Reviews

  • Hatred, jealousy and despair come to life, almost as characters in their own right, in the Repertorio Español’s Spanish-language production of ‘La casa de Bernarda Alba’… García Lorca’s grim satisfaction in exposing the pretensions, self-deceits and destructive willfulness of Bernarda Alba and her five daughters in a world of women who are all victims is almost palpable.”
