One of the great legacies in contemporary dance is the deep influence that Martha Graham had on Paul Taylor, who studied with Graham while a member of her company in the late 1950s.

Subsequently, he established his own company which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Genius fosters genius, and today, at 84 years old, Taylor remains the sole surviving member of the great 20th century choreographers. With over 140 witty, menacing, and joyful creations to date, he continues to amaze us with his inventiveness and poignancy—his creativity seems unabated. Taylor himself has received the Kennedy Center Honors, an Emmy, and a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant.”

  • “No mystery in the art of dance runs deeper than that of how movement and music can fit satisfyingly together. And today no choreographer addresses that mystery with more imaginative power than Paul Taylor.”
