Written in 1950, The Consul centers on the attempts of the freedom fighter John Sorel and his wife Magda to escape from the totalitarian country in which they live. They seek help at the consulate of a "free" country which should, in theory, help them. The opera focuses on political freedom, the individual, immigration, and on how those subjects combine.
Menotti's music combines the lyricism of one of the 20th Century's great composers with the tension of the situation to create a truly unique work.
