Theater Description

The mission of Thalia Spanish Theatre is to celebrate the vibrancy and diversity of the Hispanic/Latinx culture with unique productions of theatre, music and dance. They are the first and only BILINGUAL Hispanic theatre in Queens, serving one of the most diverse communities in the United States, including more than one million Hispanics from every Spanish-speaking nation in the world.

They’ve grown from a community-based theatre to a world class cultural institution, collaborating with guest artists from Spain, Uruguay, India, Germany, Israel, Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina and more. In over four decades the more than 245 productions of the best Spanish plays, zarzuelas (Spanish operettas) and shows of music & dance have earned national recognition as a leader in New York City’s celebrated Spanish theatre movement, have been acclaimed by audiences and critics and received 249 awards for artistic excellence locally, nationally and internationally, including: a Latin Grammy, many from ACE (Association of Critics of Entertainment)–equivalent to a Latin Tony—from HOLA (Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors) and from ATI (Artistas de Teatro Independiente), the 1997 & 1989 ENCORE Awards of the Arts & Business Council, the 1997 New York State Governor’s Arts Award and the 2009 Mayor’s Award for Arts & Culture.  

Internationally, in November 2022, Thalia’s Artistic Director Angel Gil Orrios received from the Vice President of Spain the 2022 Gold Medal awarded by the Academia de Artes Escénicas de España to the Alliance of Teatros Latinos NY, led by Thalia Spanish Theatre and eight other Hispanic theaters.  And in March 27, 2023, International Theater Day, Thalia Spanish Theatre’s Bilingual World Premiere of Life Lessons/Lecciones de Vida by Eduardo Galán produced & directed by Angel Gil Orrios, received in Madrid the first International 2023 Talia Award from the Academy of Performing Arts of Spain for the “Best Production of Performing Arts in NY by a Contemporary Hispanic/Latinx Author”.

Their productions have been presented to full houses at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall; the Millennium Theatre in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn; Kingsborough Community College; Bergen Community College in New Jersey; Millersville University in Pennsylvania; Merkin Concert Hall; outdoors at Untermyer State Park in Yonkers; the International Festival of Zarzuela in El Paso, Texas and at International Theatre Festivals in Spain, Colombia, Guatemala and South Korea.
