Theater Description

heatre Row is the name for a section of 42nd Street in New York City which is the location for a number of small theatres; it is also the name of a large theatre complex built in 2000 to house six theatres.

Theatre Row is located in Midtown Manhattan between Ninth and Eleventh Avenues. The name comes from the numerous Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway theatres that line the south side of the street. In the 1970s, it was an infamous area of brothels and peepshows, but a campaign to clean up the street was launched. Today, it is dominated by a large complex housing six small theatres: the Beckett, the Acorn, the Clurman, the Kirk, the Lion and the Studio Theatre.

It is currently home to 6 resident theatre companies: The Actors Company Theatre, Keen Company, The New Group, Resonance Ensemble, Theater Breaking Through Barriers, and the United Solo Theatre Festival.
